A history of listening to customers

The company that eventually became Deltec Homes was founded by Clyde Kinser in 1955 as Kinser Home Insulation of Asheville. Clyde sold insulation door to door, listening to his customers’ needs, and then sending a crew out the next day to install the insulation. He soon realized his customers wanted to conserve energy in many ways, so he broadened the company’s energy efficient products to aluminum doors and windows, and later vinyl products, and changed the name of the company to Kenco Corporation. Clyde brought both his sons Robert and Wayne into the business as it grew, and they helped expand its breadth and depth.

One of Wayne Kinser’s business ventures was Peppertree Resorts, a vacation resort rental company based in Asheville. Peppertree needed homes that were simple to build and built to last. Initially they built A-frame houses, but Wayne found these were not suitable for resorts, so he worked with his brother Robert to develop a circular home.

Deltec Homes 1968Robert Kinser purchased designs from another Asheville company called Rondesics who made a round structure, then made substantial improvements to create the compression ring and tension collar roof system that is so integral to Deltec Homes today. This company, called Delta Technologies, served one customer initially—Peppertree Resorts. As the popularity of these resort homes increased, other resort companies purchased Deltec homes and the commercial building applications grew.

When did the name change to Deltec homes? In the mid-1980s the business shifted from commercial applications to residential homes, primarily because people who stayed in the resorts fell in love with the panoramic views these homes provide. Today more than 85% of Deltec homes are primary family residences.

Deltec Homes operated as a subsidiary of Kinco until Kinco was sold in 1994. At that time Deltec was spun out as a separate company. Deltec Homes is a privately held company, and Robert Kinser is chairman of the board. The values established early on in the company’s development are ingrained in our culture today.
