Deltec Circular Home Fulfills Lifelong Dream:
Custom Design Creates Mountain Paradise for K.T. Miller

Asheville Citizen Times 2011

When a plan for a circular house caught his eye, K.T. Miller couldn’t get the vision out of his head. Nearly 45 years later, the round home he’d been imagining finally became a reality. A friend who bought a 100-acre piece of property in Sandy Ridge, North Carolina, just north of Winston-Salem, surprised Miller one day by inviting him to build his dream home on 10 acres of it. Miller, a retired psychotherapist and currently an art photographer, now lives there in a custom-built Deltec round home along with his wife, Laura Guyer-Miller, an organization development consultant. And while they travel around the globe throughout the year, their spacious, comfortable home always lures them back. "When anybody walks through our front door, the first thing they say is ‘wow’," says Miller, who had spent years researching companies throughout the country that build round homes.

A Home Built-to-Order

Deltec was the only company Miller found that could build a round home as large as he wanted - the threebedroom, three bath house is 2,500 square feet on the main floor, with an added 2,500 square-foot basement. He visited the Deltec model home and office in Asheville to see the construction method firsthand, liked what he saw, and began collaborating on a plan with a Deltec designer. "I gave Deltec a wish list of what I wanted in the home and their design team sent me drawings, explaining everything in detail until we got it just right," says Miller. With a custom-built Deltec circular home, the design possibilities are virtually limitless, particularly because there are no interior walls needed to support the roof. Doors, windows and walls can be put anywhere. Miller now has a "visually stunning," 57-foot-wide circular main living area including the kitchen, dining room and living room, with an enclosed soundproof media room – the perfect home for entertaining Miller and his wife’s many guests. Because of its round shape, windows and wrap-around decks, the home also takes full advantage of the breathtaking panoramic lake and mountain views.

Quality Materials & Workmanship

All Deltec home components are precision-engineered in its Asheville factory, using preassembled wall panels, roof and radial flooring sections. This process assures the highest quality while still being a simple, energy-efficient way to build. The Deltec shell package is then transported to the home site where it can be assembled in just a few days by a local builder. Deltec staff worked with Miller’s builder throughout the building process and "were there every step of the way until our home was complete," Miller says. "Deltec staff are extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with – from the salespeople we met with in the beginning to the staff who answered our questions along the way," he says.

Cost-Effective Comfort

As an energy-efficient Deltec home with fewer drafts and lower energy use than traditional square homes, Miller’s house keeps the heat in during winter months and stays cool during the summer months. The house is well-insulated with extra thick 2x6 walls and Miller marvels at his exceptionally low heating and cooling bills, which are "the same as our last home a quarter of the size," he says. "We’re pleased with every aspect of our Deltec home," Miller adds. "It’s a high-quality, well-built home and I loved the process of helping to create it."
