It's Always Sunny at Deltec
by Steve Linton - Director of Sustainable Technologies

Sunny days at DeltecIn 2007, Deltec installed the largest privately-owned solar electric array in North Carolina on the roof of our manufacturing facility, helping us achieve the goal of building all our homes with 100% renewable energy. While the honor of the largest system has since changed hands, we are proud as our system continues to make electrons flow day in and day out.

How many electrons is that, you ask? Simply click on the icon below to see our power production live. You can explore how much electricity is produced each hour or each day here at our plant.  And perhaps you can even imagine whether the skies are cloudy or clear.

Featured Homeowner - Jim and Cynthia Steel, Pensacola, FL
Two-story Monterey (1200 sq. ft./level)

Hurricane Ivan roared ashore on the Gulf Coast on September 16, 2004 at roughly 3:00 AM. Top winds were recorded at over 130 mph and 2 ½ story waves were noted in some areas over a storm surge of 10 to 13 feet. Cindy and I had battened down the house and evacuated Pensacola Beach at 4:00 PM the previous evening. Ivan was the worst we had seen with Pensacola sitting right in the dangerous NE Quadrant. We got clobbered.

Two days later, we jumped on to a friend's boat to survey our traditional boxed home. The devastation was complete and overwhelming.

Our traditional style home was condemned by the authorities and we had to tear it down. We decided to rebuild and that's when it got more interesting. Among the choices were modulars, pole & beam, octagons, bolted sides, etc. Cindy brought home a newspaper article about a round home that was hurricane resistant. Soon after, in one of the many hurricane destruction pictures we saw, there was pictured a round home in Pass Christian, MS that was the only house left standing in the entire neighborhood. Both homes were Deltecs and we were interested.

I called Deltec for some information. We were invited to Asheville, NC to see the factory and view the construction. Read the Steel's complete story here.

Meet our Suppliers

One of the most important material ingredients to the strength integrity of a Deltec home is the structural hardware. All of the hangers, straps, ties, and fasteners are specified by our engineering department based on the building codes for the home's specific site. Those engineered requirements incorporate wind, snow, and seismic factors. Simpson Strong-Tie is our source for the majority of the structural hardware. In business for over fifty years with the most complete offering of products, Simpson Strong-Tie has become the world leader in building hardware. Ride for Food Charity Event a Great Success

On Saturday, May 29, 213 cyclists from all over the Southeast joined Deltec Homes in supporting the third annual Wheel Ride for Food to raise $25,745 for Asheville/Buncombe County Meals on Wheels Organization. That's 4,120 meals and friendly home visits!

In total, almost 13,813 miles were ridden - that's as much as a trip from Asheville to San Francisco three times! The longest distance any one individual rode was 100 miles, which took about 7 hours.

Deltec Homes is proud to have been a founder and supporter of this event. We are very excited to continue our participation in 2011.
