Passive Solar/Sun Tempering Design

Deltec Homes can easily be designed to incorporate passive solar designs. Since floorplans inside Deltec Homes are completely customizable, and each 8 foot wall panel has the possibility of containing a window or door, it is easy to design for passive solar. Good floorplan layout coupled with sufficient awnings, quality windows and thermal mass can take optimum advantage of the free heating provided by the sun.
When designing your floorplan layout, there are a couple general rules to remember.

    1. Interior spaces requiring the most light and heating and cooling should be along the south face of the building.
    2. Less used spaces should be located in the north quadrant of your home.
    3. Keep window and door openings to a minimum on the east and west sides as these are the most difficult to shade in the summer. Also, most winds travel east and west, so these windows and doors on the east/west side will contribute most to air leakage.
    4. Doors and windows on the north side should also be kept to a minimum to reduce heat loss in the winter.
